This is the inaugural issue of SubVersions, the biannual journal of the School of Media and Cultural Studies, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, dedicated to presenting emerging research in media and cultural studies. The papers in this issue present a selection of research work of the students of the Master’s programme in Media and Cultural Studies, between 2008 and 2012. They cover a range of themes addressing critical contemporary concerns in media and cultural studies in India.
